Your loving long distance relationship
or close co-habitation period has been just great. You are in love
and decide to share this love
forever and ever.. together. You decide to take the plunge and seek
assistance from LEGIT to live together in Canada. The Canadian partner
agrees to sponsor the offshore partner for 3 years .... a small term
compared to a lifetime. You suffer through the immigration process
and soon you are living blissfully together on Canadian soil.
Slowly, the shine wears off and the two of you do not see the same
future ahead as planned. Something is wrong, very wrong...
Separation
It may be slow, or fast, but the new Permanent
Resident decides to move out to live alone or with a new friend who
has been on the internet chatting or has been seeing your partner
at various get togethers. It's over faster than it built up.
Your heart has been pulled out from your chest and you are crushed.
But remember, you are still on the hook, whether your partner
remains living with you or not, to the Canadian government should your partner
apply for any social assistance within the first three years after
landing in Canada.
Divorce
If you have taken advantage of the progressive
laws in Canada that have allowed you to legally marry, be aware that
this is a very recent happening and divorce laws may not equal the
marriage laws in recognizing gays and lesbians. The waters of divorce
may be deep and murky. Proceed with caution and probably lots of
cash. Did you remember to sign a Pre-nuptial agreement?
Marriage of Convenience
As unsavoury as it may sound, Marriages of Convenience
do exist. They may be pre-meditated by the foreign partner or jointly
by both partners who will jointly benefit in some way. There are
many places on the internet for such people to get together or it
may be a ruse played upon the Canadian Sponsor to quickly get into
Canada at any cost (to the Sonsor, usually). See www.migratemate.com
and other such places that LEGIT does not condone. Anyone found out
to be engaging in a "Marriage of Convenience" to gain immigration
to Canada will have their application immediately denied by C.I.C.
