{ Medical Exam }

A medical exam is required of every person requesting to be a permanent resident of Canada. The fixed fee of such exams, to be conducted only by CIC approved physicians in the country where the application is made, is to be paid for by the applicant.

Generally, Visas are granted only to those persons who do not endanger public health or public safety and do not or will not cause an excessive demand on health or social services (IRPA, Section 38)

Testing is performed to allow the analysis of the risk of " burdening the Canadian medical system".

Blood tests to determine the presence of AIDS, etc are part of the examination evaluation.

For Family Class applications, there is an exception to the requirement that a Family Class sponsored partner not cause excessive demand on the public health system. A sponsored partner (common-law or conjugal partner) may have a serious illness and still be admissible to Canada, however that person must not be a danger to public health or public safety.

For the location of the Designated Medical Practitioners (DMP) recognized by the CIC, check the CIC website for your country.

Expenses for you to get to a medical exam, the Medical exam itself and any related expenses are your reponsibility. The validity of a medical exam is one year, therefore conduct the medical exam as close as practical to the date on which you intend to submit your immigrant application.

When you go for a medical exam, take with you the following:
    -Medical Instructions form (see paragraph below)
    -Your passport original
    -photocopy of the bio-data page(s) of your passport
    -eyeglasses (if any)
    -previous medical reports (if any),
    -5 recent passport size pictures of you taken within the last 6 month.          (Some countries will require a negative also)

Fill in the 'Medical Instructions' form contained within the supplemental country specific instructions for the country of your residence outside Canada
and give the form, duly filed out by yourself, to the DMP. The DMP will give you a second original of IMM1017EFC as proof you underwent the exam. You must include this original (no photocopies allowed) with your immigrant application when you send it to your sponsor.
